Apple’s Secret Glucose Tracker: A New App to Help Prediabetics Manage Blood Sugar!

Apple has reportedly been testing an app to support prediabetics in managing their blood sugar through daily food and lifestyle choices, moving closer to its long-rumored goal of noninvasive blood glucose monitoring. According to a Bloomberg report citing unnamed Apple insiders, the company designed an app prototype that required Apple employees to verify their prediabetes status via a blood test. Employees then tracked their blood sugar levels with existing market devices, logging the effects of specific foods on their glucose.

Prediabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels are elevated but not yet at Type 2 diabetes levels. Although diabetes has no cure, prediabetes can often be reversed through diet and exercise. Apple’s app concept would help users understand how food choices impact blood sugar, for instance, showing that pairing protein with carbs can prevent spikes.

While Apple reportedly paused work on the app to prioritize other health features, the data and insights gained may shape its future health technology offerings. This shift aligns with Apple’s broader efforts in health tracking, where the company has so far focused more on partnerships with continuous glucose monitor (CGM) companies than on food tracking.

Metabolic health tech, including CGMs like Dexcom’s Stelo OTC or Abbott’s recent CGM releases, has become popular for prediabetics and Type 2 diabetics not on insulin. Additionally, startups such as Nutrisense and Levels offer CGM-based insights for those looking to manage weight, improve sports performance, or better understand food impacts on blood sugar.

Apple has reportedly been exploring noninvasive glucose monitoring for about 15 years. While still years from launch, the company’s efforts may make glucose tracking more accessible for users looking to improve metabolic health.
