Anthropic Partners with Palantir and AWS to Bring AI to US Defense Agencies

Anthropic has announced a collaboration with Palantir and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide US intelligence and defense agencies with access to its Claude family of AI models. This partnership is part of a growing trend of AI vendors working with US defense customers, with companies like Meta and OpenAI also exploring similar relationships.

Integration with Palantir’s Platform

As part of the collaboration, Anthropic’s Claude AI models will be integrated into Palantir’s platform, utilizing AWS’s hosting infrastructure. The models are now available within Palantir’s defense-accredited environment, Palantir Impact Level 6 (IL6), which provides maximum protection for critical national security data classified up to the “secret” level. According to Kate Earle Jensen, Anthropic’s Head of Sales, “We’re proud to bring responsible AI solutions to US classified environments, enhancing analytical capabilities and operational efficiencies in vital government operations.”

Enhancing Intelligence Analysis and Operational Efficiency

The partnership will equip US defense and intelligence organizations with powerful AI tools, enabling rapid processing and analysis of complex data sets. This will improve intelligence analysis, inform decision-making, streamline resource-intensive tasks, and boost operational efficiency across departments. Anthropic’s earlier move to bring select Claude models to AWS’ GovCloud demonstrates its commitment to serving US government cloud workloads.

Anthropic’s Approach to AI Development

Anthropic positions itself as a safety-conscious vendor, outlining specific use restrictions for its products in its terms of service. These include “legally authorized foreign intelligence analysis” and “identifying covert influence or sabotage campaigns.” The company tailors these restrictions based on factors like an agency’s willingness to engage in ongoing dialogue, excluding AI systems that pose a risk of catastrophic misuse or can be used for malicious purposes.

Growing Government Interest in AI

A recent Brookings Institute analysis revealed a 1,200% increase in AI-related government contracts as of March 2024. While some branches, like the US military, have been cautious in adopting AI due to ROI concerns, Anthropic’s partnership aims to address these needs. With its European expansion underway and potential new funding valuing the company up to $40 billion, Anthropic continues to grow, backed by its largest investor, Amazon.
